What is the difference between anti-static adhesive tape and conductive tape?

Anti-static adhesive tape and conductive adhesive tape is mainly due to the difference between the conductivity (the former high resistance, conductive weak, the latter low resistance, conductive strong), static dissipation rate (the former slow, the latter fast), the composition of the material (the former contains antistatic agent, the latter contains conductive filler, etc.), application scenarios (the former for static protection requirements are lower, the latter for the requirements of higher static protection and electromagnetic shielding scenarios) and appearance and maneuverability (the former is similar to ordinary tape, the latter may have a metallic luster, adhesion may be stronger).

The difference between anti-static adhesive tape and conductive adhesive tape is mainly reflected in the following aspects

Conductive properties

  • Antistatic adhesive tape: surface resistance is usually between ohm to ohm, with a certain anti-static ability, but the conductivity is relatively weak, mainly through the slow dissipation of static electricity to prevent static electricity accumulation.
  • Conductive adhesive tape: surface resistance is generally between ohm to ohm, or even lower, with good conductivity, can quickly conduct the static charge out, but also can be used for grounding and electromagnetic shielding.

Static dissipation speed

  • Anti-static adhesive tape: static dissipation rate is slow, the charge on its surface transfer is relatively difficult, it takes a certain amount of time to discharge the static electricity.
  • Conductive adhesive tape: due to its good conductivity, static dissipation speed is very fast, can be in a short period of time will be static conduction to the earth or other grounded objects, quickly eliminate static potential hazards.

Material Composition

  • Anti-static adhesive tape: usually made by coating the surface of the substrate with glue containing anti-static agent, such as OPP film surface coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive with added anti-static agent. There are also some anti-static tape using special anti-static plastic or rubber as a substrate.
  • Conductive adhesive tape: generally in the tape's substrate or adhesive layer to add conductive filler, such as metal particles, carbon fibers, etc., or the use of conductive fibers, metal foils, etc. as a substrate, so that the tape has a good conductivity. For example, conductive cloth tape is in the polyester fiber first plated on the metal nickel, in the nickel and then plated on the highly conductive copper layer, in the copper layer and then plated on the anti-oxidation and anti-corrosion nickel metal.

Application Scenario

  • Anti-static adhesive tape: mainly used for relatively low static protection requirements of the occasion, such as general electronic products, packaging, transportation and storage process of anti-static protection, to prevent static electricity on the product damage; can also be used to paste static-sensitive devices, electronic passive components, processing and sealing of bags and so on.
  • Conductive adhesive tape: commonly used in the field of electrostatic protection and electromagnetic shielding requirements, such as in the interior of electronic equipment, for the connection and shielding of electronic components, circuit boards, etc., to prevent electromagnetic interference and static electricity on the damage to precision electronic components; can also be used for the need to ground the connection and fixation of the equipment and components to ensure that the static electricity can be safely conducted to earth.

Appearance and maneuverability

  • Anti-static adhesive tape: its appearance is generally similar to that of ordinary adhesive tape, with various colors, usually black, transparent or semi-transparent. Its viscosity and flexibility and other operational properties similar to ordinary tape, easy to paste and peel, will not cause damage to the surface of the pasted object.
  • Conductive adhesive tape: some conductive tape due to the addition of conductive fillers or the use of special conductive substrates, the appearance may show a metallic luster or a specific color. Some conductive adhesive tapes may have stronger adhesion to ensure a good conductive connection, but may require greater force when peeling, and care should be taken to avoid impact on the surface of the object to be pasted.
