Anti-static tape for use in your business

When using anti-static tape, it is important to first understand what anti-static tape is for, and then understand how to properly use anti-static tape to prevent static electricity from damaging electronic components.

Definition of electrostatic discharge

Electrostatic discharge (Electrostatic Discharge) is the transfer of charge caused by objects with different electrostatic potentials coming into close proximity to each other or in direct contact.
ESD is a common source of near-field hazards, which can form high voltage, strong electric field, transient high current, and accompanied by strong electromagnetic radiation, forming electrostatic discharge electromagnetic pulse.

Sources of static electricity in the electronics manufacturing industry

In the electronics manufacturing industry, the sources of static electricity are many, such as the human body, plastic products, related instruments, and equipment, as well as the electronic components themselves.
The human body is the most important source of static electricity, which has three main reasons:

  1. The human body has a wide contact surface, and a wide range of activities, it is easy to contact with objects with electrostatic charges or friction and charged, but also many opportunities to transfer the charge carried by the body itself to the device or through the device discharge;
  2. The capacitance between the human body and the earth is low, about 50 a 250pF, a typical value of 150PF, so a small amount of human electrostatic charge can lead to a very high electrostatic potential;
  3. Human body resistance is low, equivalent to a good conductor, such as hand-to-foot resistance between only a few hundred ohms, and finger contact resistance of thousands to tens of thousands of ohms, so the human body is in the electrostatic field is also easy to induce electricity, and a part of the human body charged can cause the whole body charged.

The prevention of electrostatic discharge in electronics manufacturing is based on electrostatic discharge protection areas (EPA). the main principle of EPA is that there are no highly charged materials in the vicinity of ESD-sensitive electronic equipment, all conductive and dissipative materials are grounded, personnel is grounded, and the accumulation of charges on ESD-sensitive electronic equipment is prevented. Electrostatic discharge can damage many electronic components, especially integrated circuits and microchips. ESD safety tape is primarily used as a protective device to help prevent the generation and dissipation of static electricity that can affect electrostatic-sensitive components and equipment.

ESD tape

ESD tape differs from ordinary tape in that it has antistatic properties. This allows the tape to be used around or placed on electronic components or equipment without the risk of electrostatic discharge. ESD tapes are naturally antistatic, but most ESD tapes are treated so that there is very little risk of static electricity being generated when they are unrolled or used.

Types of anti-static tape

Different types of ESD tapes have been planned for various uses and applications in different situations. Here are 3 common examples

  1. ESD Mesh Tape
    ESD conductive tape, also known as ESD grid tape, is a popular choice for handling electrostatic protection areas on static-sensitive components and equipment. Typically, you will find that most ESD conductive tapes can be used in conjunction with ESD tape cutters, which are very convenient for bench work.
    Often, tapes are used for sealing primary or private packaging due to their EMI shielding capabilities.
  2. ESD High-Temperature Tape
    If you are looking for a high heat-resistant tape that has a certain high temperature range and maintains anti-static properties, then ESD High Temperature Tape is the perfect choice.
  3. Anti-static tapes
    Essential stationery for all static protection areas. Anti-static tapes are particularly suitable for sealing conductive plastic bags that are normally used to protect electrostatically sensitive components (i.e. electrostatic shielding bags). It can also be used to seal ESD bags and other ESD packaging/containers. Securing (bundling) IC DIP tubes.
    Packaging for container sealing, securing IC DIP tubing, and electrostatic shield bag sealing. Conformal coating or securing and sealing supplies in manufacturing.
