ESD Adhesive Tape for PCB Protection

Anti-static Kapton Tape Die Cutting Punching

Requirements for antistatic tapes for PCB protection

  • Static dissipation
    Surface resistivity: 10⁴-10¹¹ Ω/sq (according to ANSI/ESD S20.20).
Avoid static buildup damage to sensitive components (e.g. ICs, BGAs, etc.).
  • Non-destructive adhesion
Low/medium tack adhesive, no residue on removal, no damage to pads or silkscreen.
Avoid silicone-based adhesives (which can evaporate at high temperatures and contaminate PCBs).
  • High Temperature Resistance (if reflow masking is required)
    Withstands 260°C+ (lead-free soldering temperature).
  • Chemical and Cleanroom Compatibility
Low precipitation (NASA ASTM E595 tested)
Resistant to flux, alcohol and other cleaning agents.

ESD Adhesive Tape for PCB Protection Features

  • Excellent anti-static performance: surface resistance is usually between 10⁶ - 10⁹Ω, can quickly discharge static electricity, static discharge time < 0.5s, can be PCB in the process of production, transportation and storage of static electricity generated in the process of rapid conduction, to prevent static electricity on the PCB sensitive electronic components caused by damage.
  • Good adhesion: It has good adhesion to PCB materials such as copper foil, glass fiber board, etc. It can keep firm adhesion under different environmental conditions to ensure that the tape will not fall off easily in the process of protecting PCB.
  • High Temperature Resistance: Some anti-static tapes are made of high temperature resistant materials such as polyimide, which can withstand high temperatures up to about 260°C, and can meet the protection needs of PCBs during high temperature processes such as soldering.
  • Low adhesive residue: when torn off from the PCB surface, it will not leave adhesive residue, avoiding contamination of the PCB surface and affecting its performance and appearance.
  • Good insulation: It can effectively isolate the circuits and components on the PCB, preventing short circuits and other problems.

ESD Adhesive Tape for PCB Protection application scenario

  • PCB production process: In the PCB assembly, welding, testing and other processes, used to fix electronic components, masking the area that does not need to be soldered, to prevent static damage to the components, while avoiding the solder splash to other parts.
  • PCB Packaging: Anti-static tape is used to encapsulate PCBs when they are packaged, preventing damage to PCBs due to static electricity buildup during transportation and storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can antistatic tape be used on flexible PCBs (FPC)?
Yes, but you need to choose a low-adhesive polyimide tape (e.g. 3M 9713) and avoid curved areas.
  • How do I clean the tape residue?
Use IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) or a special PCB cleaner, do not use acetone (may corrode the silkscreen).
